What is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures in the spine. It involves inflating a balloon-like device in the fractured vertebra to restore its height and shape, followed by the injection of bone cement to stabilize the bone and alleviate pain.

Common Conditions Treated

Osteoporotic Fractures
Compression fractures in the spine due to osteoporosis, a condition causing weakened bones.

Vertebral Fractures

Fractures resulting from trauma or injury.

Spinal Tumors

Fractures caused by tumors in the vertebrae.

Procedure Overview

Frame 4

Preparation

The patient lies face down on the procedure table, and local anesthesia is applied to numb the area. Sedation may also be given for comfort.
Frame 4

Balloon Insertion

A hollow needle is guided into the fractured vertebra using fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance). A balloon-like device is inserted through the needle and inflated to create a cavity within the vertebra.
Frame 4

Cement Injection

Once the cavity is created, medical-grade bone cement is injected into the space to stabilize the fracture.
Frame 4

Completion

The balloon is deflated and removed, and the cement hardens quickly to stabilize the vertebra. The entire procedure usually takes about one to two hours per vertebra treated.

Benefits

Improved Function: Allows for improved mobility and quality of life.

Frame 4

Minimally Invasive: Less risk and quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

Frame 4

Short Recovery Time: Most patients can resume normal activities within a few days to weeks.

Risks and Side Effects

Infection at the injection site

Frame 4

Bleeding or increased pain

Frame 4

Cement leakage into surrounding tissues

Frame 4

Allergic reaction to the bone cement (rare)

Nerve damage or spinal cord injury (very rare)

Recovery and Aftercare

Frame 4

Immediate

Some patients may experience mild discomfort or soreness at the injection site. Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24-48 hours.
Frame 4

Short-Term

Gradual return to normal activities as tolerated. Follow post-procedure care instructions provided by your physician.
Frame 4

Long-Term

Regular follow-up appointments to monitor healing and ensure optimal outcomes. Physical therapy may be recommended to improve strength and mobility.
