Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency Ablation1

What is Radiofrequency Ablation?

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure used to reduce pain by disrupting nerve function. By applying heat generated from radiofrequency energy to specific nerves, RFA can effectively block pain signals from being transmitted to the brain.

Common Conditions Treated

Chronic Back and Neck Pain

Often due to arthritis or degenerative disc disease.

Facet Joint Pain

Caused by arthritis or injury to the small joints in the spine.

Sacroiliac Joint Pain

Pain stemming from the joints connecting the lower spine to the pelvis.

Peripheral Nerve Pain

Pain in other parts of the body such as knees, hips, or shoulders due to arthritis or other conditions.

Neuropathic Pain

Resulting from nerve damage.

Procedure Overview

Frame 4

Preparation

The patient is positioned to allow access to the target area. Local anesthesia is applied to numb the skin and tissues around the injection site.
Frame 4

Guidance

Using fluoroscopy (a type of X-ray) or Ultrasound (USG) for precise needle placement, the physician inserts a thin needle to the location of the targeted nerve.
Frame 4

Stimulation Test

A small electrical current is applied to ensure the needle is near the correct nerve. This may produce a tingling sensation.
Frame 4

Ablation

Once confirmed, radiofrequency energy heats the tip of the needle to create a controlled lesion on the nerve, disrupting its ability to send pain signals.
Frame 4

Completion

The needle is removed, and a bandage is applied. The patient is monitored for a short time before being discharged.

Recovery and Aftercare

Frame 4

Immediate

Patients may experience soreness or discomfort at the treatment site. Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24 hours.
Frame 4

Short-Term

Apply ice packs to reduce swelling and take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed.
Frame 4

Long-Term

Pain relief typically begins within a few days and can last several months. Follow-up physical therapy may be recommended to maintain benefits.
